Settings tips for Plywood 5mm

birch ply cuts cleaner than poplar; glue voids cause incomplete cuts — add a pass rather than power. Test-cut a small square first: dial speed, not power, until it just cuts through — cleaner edge, less char.

Can your machine actually cut this?

Plywood is the friendliest material on this list — every machine type here will cut it. What changes between a diode and a CO2 machine is only how many passes and how dark the edge comes out. A 10 W diode will get through 3 mm but will char it; a 60 W CO2 goes through in one fast pass with a much lighter edge.

5 mm is the sweet spot for most machines here. A CO2 machine will do it in one pass; a diode usually wants two at a moderate speed rather than one slow crawl, because a slow single pass dumps heat into the surrounding material and chars the face. If a cut fails at this thickness the cause is almost always focus, not power — check that the focus is set to the surface before you turn anything up.

Buying the right sheet

Buy laser-grade or aircraft ply, not construction ply. This is the single biggest cause of "my laser won't cut through". Cheap plywood contains internal voids — pockets of air and glue between the veneers. The beam crosses a void, loses its focus and the cut simply stops in the middle of an otherwise perfect line. No settings change fixes a void. Glue lines also char darker than the wood around them, which is why some cuts come out stripey.

Safety — read this before the first cut

Nothing toxic here, but plywood is the most common cause of laser fires because it cuts slowly enough to sustain a flame. Do not leave it running unattended.

Getting a clean edge

Two accessories fix more plywood complaints than any settings change. A honeycomb bed stops the beam reflecting off a solid surface back into the underside of the sheet — that reflection is what causes the brown halo people blame on too much power. Air assist blows smoke out of the kerf before it can stain the cut face. Masking tape on the top surface handles the rest.
