Settings tips for Leather 1mm
vegetable-tanned leather only — chrome-tanned releases toxic fumes. Expect a burnt-edge smell; mask the surface. Test-cut a small square first: dial speed, not power, until it just cuts through — cleaner edge, less char.
Can your machine actually cut this?
Both diode and CO2 machines cut and engrave leather well — it is one of the few materials where a modest diode produces genuinely professional results, because leather engraves by darkening rather than by depth.
At 1 mm this is a single-pass, high-speed cut. The risk at this thickness is going too slowly: the heat has nowhere to go in a thin sheet, so it spreads sideways and you get a wide, scorched kerf instead of a crisp line. If the edge looks burnt, speed up before you touch the power. Thin leather also warps from the heat of a long job — cut in a different order, or tab the parts, if you see pieces lifting.
Buying the right sheet
Use vegetable-tanned leather. Beyond safety, veg-tan is the leather that engraves to a rich dark brown; it takes the mark the way people expect from the photos they have seen online.
Safety — read this before the first cut
Never laser chrome-tanned leather. Most cheap upholstery and garment leather is chrome-tanned, and heating it releases hexavalent chromium — a confirmed carcinogen. This is the most serious hazard on this site and it is invisible: chrome-tanned and veg-tanned leather look the same. If the supplier will not tell you the tanning method, do not put it in the machine. The same applies to anything labelled "faux", "PU" or "bonded" leather, which is usually PVC-backed and releases chlorine gas.
Getting a clean edge
Real leather smells strong when cut — that part is normal. The edge seals slightly as it cuts, which is useful. Run extraction throughout; the smell settles into a workshop and stays for days.
