What this machine physically cannot do

This is a diode laser, roughly 450 nm blue light. That wavelength decides what it can touch, and no settings change moves the boundary:

It cannot cut clear acrylic. Transparent acrylic barely absorbs blue light — the beam passes straight through and marks whatever is under the sheet. This is the single most common disappointment with a diode machine, and it is physics, not power. Dark and opaque acrylic can be cut, because the pigment absorbs the beam. If clear acrylic matters to you, you need a CO2 machine.

It cannot engrave bare metal. It will mark coated, anodised or painted metal very well by burning the coating away, which covers most of what people actually want. Bare steel or aluminium needs a fiber laser.

What it is genuinely good at: wood, plywood, MDF, leather, card, felt, painted and anodised surfaces — and it is quiet, cheap to run and has no mirrors to align.

What fits, and what it is like to live with

The bed is 410 × 420 mm. In practice that means it takes an A3 sheet flat, and you can nest roughly 16 100 mm coaster blanks in a single run before you have to reload.

This is the entry cutting class. 3 mm plywood and MDF are realistic in two or three passes; 5–6 mm is possible but slow enough to be annoying, and the edge darkens. Engraving is where it shines. If most of your work is 3 mm and under, this power is enough — if you keep reaching for 6 mm, you will outgrow it quickly.

Sculpfun S9 FAQ

How fast does the Sculpfun S9 cut 3 mm plywood?

About 4 mm/s. Cutting a 100 × 60 mm part (320 mm of cut) takes roughly 1 m 20 s of machine time on the Sculpfun S9.

Can the Sculpfun S9 cut clear acrylic?

No. The Sculpfun S9 is a diode laser (~450 nm) and passes straight through clear acrylic. It can cut dark, opaque acrylic. Use a CO2 laser for clear acrylic.

What is the Sculpfun S9 bed size?

The Sculpfun S9 has a 410 × 420 mm work area (16.1 × 16.5 inches). That is the largest part it can cut in one pass without repositioning the material.

How much does it cost to run the Sculpfun S9?

Laser cutting is priced by machine time: cut length ÷ cutting speed × passes = time, then time × hourly rate + setup. At €60/h a 100 × 60 mm plywood part costs about €1.33. Use the calculator to price your own file.

How much does the Sculpfun S9 cost?

~€250–300 as of August 2026, for the machine alone. Budget extra for extraction, a decent air assist and material. Street prices move, so treat this as a starting point and check the seller before you quote work on it. Full reasoning in our budget laser engraver guide.
